Hi everyone, my name is Coco. As you can see, I’m a pretty sweet looking 12 year old lab/something (maybe border collie?). And I’m very honored to be chosen as pet of the month. (although truth be told, my ‘mom’ might have campaigned a little. She’s like that).
Anyway, I live with my two human parents, Lezli and Cole….and my 2 canine siblings Zoe, 11 (black lab) and Hershel, 2 (yellow lab). But my journey to this family was a bit of a winding road.
When I was a puppy, my first home was with a family in the Houston area. They were actually from the same hometown as who would become my next human parent, and ultimately my current parents. After a couple of years, my Houston family realized that I might be happier elsewhere, and that is where this really amazing Dude, Charlie came into the picture in Austin. He was so cool and we were best buddies. He took me all kinds of places – California, Big Bend, his ranch, you name it. When he would have to go out of town without me, he would ask his good friends, Lezli and Cole, to keep me. (you see where this is going?).
Well, Lezli and COLE LOVED me. They even tried to get Charlie to give me to them to no availJ Cole and Lezli then tried to find a dog of their own – they always told me they were trying to find one as good as me….and they finally found one – and her name was Zoe (again, you see where this is going).
Sadly, right after they got Zoe, my dad Charlie got some really bad news. I heard everyone talking about it but didn’t understand – he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Although I didn’t understand what was going on, I could sense that it wasn’t good. Tragically, my buddy Charlie passed away in March 2013 at home. Lezli and I were both there and I watched over him until they took him away. Fortunately, Charlie had already made arrangements for me and I was to go live with Lezli, Cole and Zoe. So, while I was super super sad and didn’t know what was happening, I felt at home already with my new family.
THEN….just this past summer, a new canine sibling came into our lives. At first, I was skeptical and didn’t know why we needed another one, but my parents told me it was meant to be and this young pup Hershel needed a new home. He has a lot of energy but I like playing with him and we are all three pretty good friends now.
We have SO MUCH FUN. My dad Cole takes me in his truck a lot and we get to go really fun places too like Colorado, Abilene, Wimberley, etc. I really like to swim (which wasn’t always the case). I take my ‘job’ very seriously. Some call me the ‘fun police’ – I just like things a little orderly. I really like my people to go to bed at 9pm sharp – since that rarely happens, I make my displeasure known by ‘snapping’ my teeth trying to convince them to come with me. And I feel my #1 job is watching over my humans – so much so that I go to the bathroom with my mom (and dog sitters/aunts) and guard them while they do their business.
I am OBSESSED with squirrels! Stalking, chasing and sometimes catching them is probably my FAVORITE thing to do. I also LOVE running – just running in an open field. My parents tell me I have a huge smile on my face when I’m running in the open. I also love sleeping with my people – my brother and sister don’t really do that so I feel pretty special about that.
I’ve always been told I have an old and gentle soul, even when I was younger.(except when it comes to white dogs – for some reason they really rub me the wrong way). My mom calls me her angel dog and she says she can look directly in my eyes and I know what she’s thinking (which is true). I just really love my people and I’m really really glad that at my age I’m still doing pretty great – a little slower and a few ‘old lady lumps’ but I don’t care about that – just that I can still do all of the things I love to do with the people I love!
